What is Video Production

In today’s society, the definition of video production is a very subjective thing. The most commonly used answer is the process of creating a video by capturing moving images. Just like every process video production has a beginning, middle, and end. We call this process is called the three phases of video production. Pre-production, production, and post-production.

Pre-production

In pre-production, everything that occurs before the cameras begin rolling is settled. First, you find a story to capture. Every video captures some sort of story, something to grab the attention of the audience. The concept for the script or outline of the video is chosen. Then the script is written. People are chosen to be in the video. These people or cast members are either representing a department within a company or themselves. The crew is then formed, the crew usually consists of audio/sound members, camera operators, production assistants, and a director. Locations for each scene, or segment of the video, are chosen and set up to get the cameras ready. Final revisions and corrections are then approved. Then an outline of what order everything will be recorded is created. Other things will be reviewed as well including lighting design. In production, everything is being executed. All crew and cast meet in one location to begin filming. Each segment of the script is carried out with multiple different takes to choose from. Audio is recorded at the same time. Different transition shots of the environment are taken to help give the video a good flow to it. Lighting is checked one last time and the record button is pressed.

Post-Production

Post-Production is carried out after the filming of the video. Post-production involves choosing which shots and clips from filming to use. The footage chosen then goes into editing. Where all the footage is put together in the correct order. Lastly, any final touches like logos, voiceovers, color correction, etc. are added to the video. The video is then sent to be approved. When it comes to the process of video production there are many different categories. There is an endless list of categories for video production. But some are Education, Healthcare, Interior Design, and Corporate videos.

Educational videos

Educational videos are created to teach the audience a lesson. Many colleges create Educational videos for students that cannot make it to class or are having trouble with studying. Educational videos are able to answer two questions, why? and what? These questions are incredibly significant when it comes to educational video production. Answering both of these questions in educational videos will provide the reader with an understanding of the topic without worrying about not being able to ask questions. People creating educational videos need to be incredibly clear with what they say because the students watching will most likely not be able to ask questions. Examples of educational videos are How-to-tutorials, video lessons, online classroom instructions, etc.

HealthCare Videos

HealthCare videos are created for two main purposes. To inform patients and to train staff. HealthCare videos are beneficial in the medical world because they inform the patient and make sure they know what is really going on in procedures and why. Informational videos for patients can include anything from what a machine does to testimonials from past patients. Training staff in the medical industry can also include video production. These videos can also include what a machine does, but also can include what certain instruments are used for, safety videos, and even how to perform certain procedures.

Corporate Video

Corporate videos help to show the public what goes on in a company or even help showcase a company’s story. Corporate videos help to show a company’s product, creating a community and a relationship between the company and the client. Corporate Video production gives companies more of a presence in the community with this technology-based generation. With there being categories and phases of video production there are also big components to video production, like lighting, sound, and color correction.

Lighting

People often underestimate the role of lighting in video production. Lighting creates the mood of a video. The darker the lightning and the more shadows you have the scarier the video seems. Not only does lighting set the mood for a video but it also defines how much time you spend editing. The worse the lighting the more hours you’re going to spend in editing, or you can re-shoot the scenes but that can cost more money. Lighting also portrays the video quality. Because you’re making a video, the visuals are one of the main things that make or break your video quality. To create the perfect lighting you need a professional who knows how to use things correctly like direct lighting, three-point lighting and how to use outdoor lighting.

Sound

The sound is incredibly important in video production because if the audience cannot hear the speaker clearly or the audio seems distorted the audience will lose focus and leave the video. Be careful with background noise, if you can hear things in the background that are loud and distracting, chances are the audio will pick it up and your audience will not pay attention to the focus of the video. No matter how beautifully shot the video is, if you have terrible audio no one is going to watch. So make sure you have someone monitoring audio at all times, check the audio frequently and test the audio recorder before every use.

Color Correction

The last component of video production is called color correction. Color correction is incredibly important in the video production industry. Color correction is the act of matching colors throughout your video. Like lighting, color correction helps to set the mood for a video. It gets rid of any noise in dark shots, noise is what makes a shot that has been filmed in the dark, look pixelated. It also helps to adjust the color when using lighting that is constantly changing, like outdoor lighting. Color correction occurs in the post-production phase by whoever is editing the video.

With all of this being said, video production is being used by many industries every day as technology improves. Making video production prominent in today’s society. The reason video production is becoming a large industry is that we are living in a technology-based society. More people would rather watch a video that grabs their attention than read about it. They are also more likely to share a video than an article. As technology is becoming more prominent, so is video production. The more people use technology the shorter their attention span is and to them watching a video is way faster than reading. Which is why youtube is the second largest search engine behind Google. So now more industries are beginning to use video production to get their message across to their targeted audience.

Not only is video production important but it also has its benefits for businesses, artists, and really anyone trying to showcase something. Youtube is one of the biggest websites in the world right now, so not only is there the opportunity of buying ads and putting your business out there. There is also an opportunity for creating a connection between a business and a client, through the power of video production. With our technology-based generation, businesses reach a wider audience when using video production and publishing those videos.
